The Kassen University has revolutionized life on Meron. While it is inaccessible to all but the wealthiest of men (and, more rarely, women), the intellectual fruits it bears are seen across the country. From mechanical inventions such as the Kassen Clock Tower to philosophical and mathematical discoveries, the University has contributed enormously to the cultural sophistication of Meron.
HISTORY
Founded by King Tithenar in approximately 505 BM, the University originally consisted of twelve young nobles who wished to study under the tutelage of more knowledgable men. They began in a modest house overlooking the city green, learning about the sciences from two kenadezo. The next year all twelve returned, bringing with them twenty more, who showed interest in a wide variety of subjects, ranging from philosophy to mathematics. The King called for more wise men to come and teach, and more did, from not only religious backgrounds.
By 520, the university catered to some eight hundred students and the construction of a massive castle-like complex was well under way. The University has since been expanded and now covers an entire side of the market square. It includes dormitories, dining halls, lecture rooms, and art galleries, all of which are closed to all but those who are enrolled at the univeresity or who teach there.
SYSTEM
While the original setup of the University was fairly informal, the present-day University teaches a wide variety of specific focus subjects. In honor of the original twelve students, each Mentor is paired with twelve pupils, who are apprenticed to him until such a time as he pronounces their education complete or they choose to leave. Mentors whose pupils have left them rarely take them back; although it's not forbidden to leave and then come back, it's frowned upon. Most students have three mentors; though it is possible to have five, such a load of work is difficult to carry, and only the most dedicated students dare to do so.
There is no set duration for education. Depending on the depth of one's interest, one may study for two or ten or twenty years, switching fields when one has achieved desired depth of knowledge. Many who do this end up staying on as mentors themselves.
SUBJECTS
The range of topics offered at the University is largely dependent upon the availability of mentors to teach it, but the following focuses are almost always offered:
- Alchemy
- Archetecture
- Arts
- Astronomy
- Etanan Studies
- History (focuses in all periods)
- Korbeth Studies
- Mathematics
- Modern Politics
- Medicine
- Philosophy
- Theology, Karbean
- Theology, Hafeled
As well as many others.
