Accommodation and Meals

In the Cities

If you were a traveler in a Meron city such as Kassen, you would have little difficulty finding a place to spend the night. At a given inn in the city, a shared room is typically two yadezha, while a private room with a bed can be let at four yadezha a night. Meals are not included, but a standard lunch or dinner can be commonly found for a betezha or less. Breakfast is seldom officially offered, but can usually be obtained at little cost if the intrepid traveler knows to ask.

In such well-established cities as Kassen, there are also restaurants, but they are patronized primarily by the very wealthy and the prices are often exorbitant. A better bet would be a coffeehouse or a tavern. The former is more often patronized by the highbrow, but both are open many hours and often feature live entertainment (though of varying qualities).

Street vendors also sell food, often for cheaper prices than more official establishments. You’ll be able to find rolls anywhere, often filled with pork, cheese, or vegetables. Small pies are also often available, hot. In landlocked cities, they’ll be made with vegetables and chicken or beef; in coastal areas you’re more likely to find fish or some other kind of seafood. Many dishes feature a thick, savory sauce. For dessert you’ll want to try a delicate pastry or two, made with honey and nuts wrapped in a thin, fragile crust.

In the Country

If you’re brave enough to venture beyond populated areas into less civilized country, you had better have a good grasp of the language. Accommodation is harder to come by, but if you’re lucky you’ll find a barn or two to sleep in. In the southern and northernmost areas, however, you’re most likely out of luck; people lock their doors in the later hours and you had better bring a bedroll because it’s likely you’ll be sleeping under the stars.

Food, however, can be easily found. If you have the foresight, bring a foreign trinket or tool to tempt the curious peasant into offering you a meal in exchange for a pretty new toy. Many, particularly in the central lands, will also be more than happy to offer you a stout meal in exchange for news from the city.
