Clock Tower Square in Kassen
The capital of Meron, Kassen is one of the oldest cities on the island. It's the cultural, political, and geographical center of the island, home to the country's only University, the King's seat (Myrelyr Castle), the Zal a Debedo, and the Zaldesem (the leaders of the Karbean Faith).
HISTORY
Kassen dates back to the earliest days of civilization. It was only a small village when Myrelyr united central Meron and built Myrelyr Castle on the site where it stands today. When the Myrelyris family took up rule of the entire island, Kassen became its capital and grew into the city that exists in the present.
CULTURE
The University, founded by King Tithenar in the early 500s, is the center of cultural learning for the Meroned. It offers education in medicine, science, religion, politics, art, music, and many other fields. While much of what it teaches is beyond the average mind's comprehension, and its fees make it also beyond most people's means, the contribution it makes to the tapestry of Meron life is enormous, and it has launched a minor Rennaissance, wherein art and invention have flourished.
Among the fruits of the University are structures such as the Kassen Clock Tower, which stands across the market square from the University and not only is a marvel of ingenuity and elegance but also brings the concept of time to the common man. Prior to its construction, only the richest had access to the clock, and it has revolutionized the functioning of Kassen.
POLITICS
Kassen is home to both the ruling branches of government - the Zal a Debedo, which moderates the king and operates as the highest level of the judicial system, and the monarchy itself.
