Getting Into Trouble (And Out of It)

You should try to avoid embroilment in conflict of any kind. However, in case any should arise, you should carry some kind of weapon, even if you don’t know how to use it. It’ll scare off some of the petty thieves.

If you do find yourself in an imbroglio, most cities have a constabulary force, the meles danezo (common slang labels them lesnez, which is generally an acceptable title. They’re also sometimes called prosse nywayo, but you should avoid the term, as it’s less than respectful and considered vulgar). Since the primary function of city lesnez is to discourage pickpocketing and break up fights, they’ll be happy to help. However, if something’s been stolen they’re not likely to be much good when it comes to retrieving it, and if your fight is over a women, they’re likely to throw both of you in the lockup (melesmoz) for a night just to keep you out of trouble.

If you get sick, it’s wiser to find a country herbalist (kerdyez) than a city doctor (kyanhorkad). Though some doctors know their business, as in medieval Europe, more are concerned with astrology and bizarre theories. Even if you do find an herbalist, make sure she (or, rarely, he) has a good reputation before you take the “cure”.
