The hills of the south are not well-suited to farming, and people have turned to other industries as a means of livelihood. Some areas rely on pottery, while others deal in stone and iron mining, fancy work, and other handcrafts. Because of historical conflict with the Etanans, most cities and towns are walled in and guarded well, even in times of peace.
Culturally, southern people tend to live a slower lifestyle than their northern fellow-countrymen. Because of the extreme humidity in the summers, houses are built long, low, and airy, out of cool stone with tiled roofs and external kitchens. Southern people are richer on average but the gap between the wealthy and the impoverished is extreme.
